Kaffee und Kuchen

Hello,

So it just occurred to me to give a review on this new sort of coffee that I’m having right now while watching Elizabeth Olsen Eats Her Last Meal. Yes, it’s 9:30 pm, and yes, it is washed coffee, aka decaf, so no worries about sleeping tonight (at least for me, no promises for my neighbor who has to hear me grind coffee beans at 9 pm using my very loud grinder every night, sorry). It is a Pink Bourbon from Colombia from rvtc. BTW, It is a great roaster, they also have some kind of a radio on their website, where they broadcast some cool playlists from Soundcloud. In addition, they have Yemeni coffee too, which was one of the best I’ve had. Anyways, back to the Colombian coffee, supposedly, it’s a light roast but not really light in color, not sure if washing has something to do with it or that’s how it supposed to look like, I will look it up later. At first I thought it had some orange/citrus taste, but looking up its info on the seller’s site, it should be floral and cakey (ginger bread spice and Jaffa to be exact). I am not that well versed in those acidic flavors yet. Speaking of cake (which I didn’t know until writing this post), I’m drinking (more like sipping) it while having small bites from my chocolate chip cookie cake I’ve bought today. I’ve tried it yesterday as an Americano without the cake and I wasn’t the biggest fan, tonight it’s with milk and it fits it perfectly somehow. Don’t tell r/espresso. It’s actually a very unique mix of flavors, cake, coffee, cinnamon, cake and milk. A literal Christmas vibe drink. Also, what’s up with Americanos with milk, am I the only one who makes them? From my research, people either drink Americano or a Latte. But what do I know, I’ve only just recently heard about the Soup drink. It was popularized by Lance Hedrick to brew light roast espresso without pressure. The first time I’ve heard about it, I was like…huh? so just Arabic coffee? But this is another debate, for another time. Somehow I’ve never given a review of the 2nd (or is it?) thing I’m most knowledgeable about. Now that I am German I’ve also just realized, I didn’t get to finish my Kaffee und Kuchen. Until the next one.

P.S. the AI generated the photo of a cup with two handles in the background, I find it cute and funny (they will take over soon).

Background noise

In atmospheric observations, the mean atmospheric state over a certain time period is referred to as the background. It serves to distinguish between the fluctuations e.g. gravity waves and what is actually measured. Another (not really) related term is background noise, it is defined for lidar systems as the photons irradiated or reflected onto the detector from undesired radiation sources such as the sun and artificial light sources. Usually, you’d want to accurately estimate this noise and remove it so that your measurement would reflect a better estimate of the real atmospheric state you’re observing.

Okay so that was the scientific definition relevant to what I’m doing in my PhD, what about the background noise in our lives? and I don’t mean the ambient noise around us whether it’s people talking, wind outside, murmurs in a library or a coffee shop or similar kind of noise. I mean what runs in the background of your brain, when you’re doing something but you still feel like you’re supposed to be doing another thing or if someone is talking to you but you’re not able to comprehend what they’re saying since your mind is somewhere else. It’s like your brain is thinking and experiencing emotions in the background but it’s unable to bring it into reality.

You know, one could argue there will always be a war somewhere and you can’t expect yourself to care and give adequate attention to what is happening all around the world while pursuing a career, doing your hobbies, and just living your daily life. Also, the current (at least in the western) society feels like it is built on the premise that there is just not enough time for you to show empathy towards outsiders. It can be just capitalism that is the main reason for this type of apathy but I think it is more than that.

The sound of a warplanes flying over one’s head, the tanks marching and bombing, people’s screams around you. These are not background noises, these are someone’s reality. It is indeed a deplorable analogy to compare someone’s suffering with noise. This is what I felt when I read someone’s tweet which was describing how while doing normal daily life stuff, you remember the suffering of the Gazans, especially the children.

From my anecdotal academic experience, I feel like nobody mentions what’s happening in Palestine. It’s like we will just act as if either we don’t know what’s happening or simply it just isn’t happening. I keep asking myself, do others also think about the suffering there in the background of their minds. I really wish I could do something about it other than donating.

Hello and Welcome

Hello,

I’m starting this blog as a way to document my journey as a PhD candidate. It has been almost 8 months since I’ve started this path and I’m feeling more connected and interested in it day by day. I will try to write as often as I can or as much as the time will allow me. I’ve had another personal blog for more than 8 years now but it was mostly where I could release my feelings and personal growth sometimes in poems and sometimes in a lengthy article. This blog is going to be different, or I hope so.

Until then, see ya.
